Modern Records: A Conversation with Recording Pioneer Joe Bihari.

- Abstract
Pioneering record man Joe Bihari could not have been a better choice to be invited to appear in the Los Angeles Recording Legends segment at the 2011 ARSC Conference. After all, with brothers Jules and Saul, he had formed Modern Records in L.A. way back in 1945 at the dawn of the independent record era. As with Bihari's previous appearances at the Ponderosa Stomp in New Orleans (2008, 2009) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland (2009), he accepted the invitation without hesitation. Once again, I acted as moderator. Bihari, still agile-minded as he approached his 86th birthday, beguiled the ARSC audience with crisp answers to my questions and reminiscences of the records played. The session was voted one of the two most popular programs of the conference (along with the radio play featuring Norman Corwin). I would add that such is the depth of Bihari's story that whenever I talk to him new facts and info always seem to emerge, as in this instance. As a postscript, I was delighted that Bihari was able to be present with his daughter Nicole at the ARSC last-night celebrations when I was presented with a certificate of merit for "Record Makers and Breakers." Also attending was another prominent record man, member Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie Records. Here, then, for the entire ARSC readership is the transcript of the Joe Bihari session held on Friday, 13 May 2011, including records played. Editing has been minimal.
