- Authors
Ellis, Harold
- Abstract
The article profiles Ignaz Semmelweis, who was born in 1818 in Budapest, and was a pioneer in the effort to prevent puerperal sepsis. Semmelweis noticed that the patients of physicians who performed autopsies before performing obstetrical procedures had a higher mortality rate. He initiated a process of hand-washing for the physician until the smell of the post-mortem room had been totally eradicated from the surgeon's hands.
