- Abstract
The article presents information on an unusually translucent non-nacreous pearl which was brought to the Gem & Pearl Testing Laboratory of Bahrain. The 13.88 carat unevenly colored brown to dark brown non-nacreous pearl measured 14.46 to 14.73 x 10.58 mm and exhibited moderate-to-significant surface-reaching cracks. X-radiography showed a distinct radial structure which is typical of some non-nacreaous pearls with a much less defined concentric structure following the exterior button shape. Microscopic observation revealed that the pearl's radial columnar structure was manifested on its surface as a cellular pattern which was readily apparent with both transmitted and overhead fluorescent light.
