- Abstract
The article discusses the origin of the term "Pimitéoui" as the place name used by Native Americans for Peoria Lake, Illinois. The earliest recorded explanation of the word is attributed to a Franciscan missionary called Zénobe Membré who assisted French explorer Cavelier de La Salle’s expedition in 1679. Membré remarked that "Pimitéoui" in the native Miami-Illinois language means "fat" in reference to the abundance of fat animals living there. Remarks made about the "Lake of Fat" in a memoir written by Pierre-Charles Delliette, a man who lived in the area during the late 1600s, are examined.
