- Abstract
The article presents an account of the efforts of French legal scholars in the 16th century to unify and harmonize the internally inconsistent body of French law which prevailed at the time. It focuses on the contributions of Michel de L'Hôpital, a humanist legal scholar and judge who was the chancellor of France from 1560 to 1568. French law had evolved from Roman law in an unsystematic manner, and L'Hôpital hoped that his attempts to systematically unify French legal theory would help to unite the nation. The religious conflicts which led to the Wars of the Huguenots in the later 16th century are discussed in this context.
