- Abstract
The article presents the author's reflections on the rivers of East Texas and their significance to the history and culture of the region. Several accounts are given describing the writings and stories of historic figures and communities in Texas, including those of the Spanish explorer Luis Moscoso on the Red River in 1542, the book "Freedom Colonies: Independent Black Texans in the Time of Jim Crow," by Thad Sitton and Jim Conrad, and "Texas Riverman," by William Seale, describing the life of the early Republic frontiersman Captain Andrew Smyth.
