- Title
A Decade of Disorder? The Performance of Justice in Cheshire in the 1590s.
- Authors
Lagemann, Abby E.
- Abstract
The article examines the works of the local law enforcement officials in the county of Cheshire in northwest England, specifically the justices of peace (JP), to determine if they reflect the economic crisis that occurred in the area in the 1590s. The court records on criminal activity, as well as legal documents about vagrancy, larceny, and bastardy, among others, were examined. The opinions of historian Ian Archer and Peter Clark on the subject are also cited.
