The article focuses on U.S. federal court decisions since 1985 concerning fair use claims in copyright infringement lawsuits, with particular focus on the lawsuits placed by Nevada-based law firm Righthaven. The author discusses the debate of using news content online, analyzes the relationship between traditional media outlets and digital media technology, and examines how courts have decided if unauthorized re-publication of news stories is considered copyright infringement or is protected as fair use.
