- Abstract
The article examines the role of language in cultivating non-violence in the minds of people. The perception of a hierarchical structure of languages and how it manifests in people's behavior and beliefs is discussed. Annihilatory thinking about languages and identities is illustrated through stories from a collage of laments, "Dekh Kabira Roya" by Manto, and from the novel "Three Elegies for Kosovo." An anecdote by the late philosopher Ramchandra Gandhi showing the significance of language is also analyzed.
