The article offers information related to the archaisms in diction and syntax of a prayer. Topics discussed include invocation, an invitation, and an exclamation of praise in prayers; anxiety about prayerly deficiencies shadow sixteenth and seventeenth century debates about prayer; and unknowable gap between human action and divine interpretation that is a tension at the heart of both the ideology and practice of prayer.
