The author reflects on a research conducted by C. McCully and colleagues related to stellar explosions in thermonuclear supernovae. Topics discussed include astronomical challenges in describing the nature of supernovae, detection of two supernovae in the spiral galaxy NGC 1309 by using Hubble Space Telescope and the identification of the luminous, blue progenitor system of the type Iax SN 2012Z in deep pre-explosion imaging.
