- Abstract
Reading comprehension is a very important competence for students of all levels of education, particularly for those of university studies, due to the fact that the information they receive comes from expositive and argumentative texts. In Mexico, there are very few instruments that allow evaluating and identifying the level of comprehension achieved, which is shy a parallel test was elaborated and validated from the Instrument to Evaluate Reading Comprehension in University Students (ICLAU in Spanish), which has as its main objective obtaining data regarding levels of comprehension (literary, reorganizing information, inference, critical and appreciative) that university students have. This study's findings indicate that it is necessary to focus on explicit reading strategies so that students develop proper competence levels of reading comprehension. The instrument here presented was developed in two phases. During the first, a very similar instrument to the ICLAU was developed; the second consisted in the process of content validity through expert judges. Data and relevant statistical analyses are presented. The results are discussed regarding this tests utility as a similar to the ICLAU and as posttest instrument for programs aimed at teaching reading strategies.
