- Abstract
The emergence of North American capitalism has gone hand in hand with a renewal of the means of redistribution of wealth. In parallel with public and religious systems, a private-sector mode of redistribution has developed, structured around entities legally incorporated as not-for-profit organizations: private philanthropic foundations. While their existence can be traced back to antiquity and they have been active in Quebec and the rest of Canada since the early 1900s, they have attracted little attention from Canadian researchers. Following a historical review of the emergence and development of philanthropy in Europe and of private foundations in the United States, the paper offers a very preliminary assessment of the situation of private foundations in Canada, focusing on Quebec. It also examines possible reasons for Canadian researchers' lack of interest in philanthropy and foundations. Lastly, it argues that it is essential for new economic sociology to get to grips with philanthropy and public and private foundations so that it can develop a new framework for analysis.
