COMPASSIONATE CONSUMERISM WITHIN THE GATT REGIME: CAN BELGIUM'S BAN ON SEAL PRODUCT IMPORTS BE JUSTIFIED UNDER ARTICLE XX?
- Authors
Galantucci, Robert
- Abstract
The article discusses the argument whether the decision of Belgium to ban the import and sale of seal products is compliant to the exceptions found in Article XX of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Information on the exceptions considered under Article XX(a) and (b) is discussed. It was found that the ban is accepted under Article XX(a) since it aims to protect public morals and animal life.
