- Abstract
The article examines the implications of business and political connections through politician Joel Roberts Poinsett, whose diversified interests helped reveal the shifting positions of individuals within Texas. Topics include reason Congressman James Hamilton Jr. and Poinsett differed on nullification, Poinsett's influence on the opposition of U.S. President Martin Van Buren to the annexation of Texas, and Poinsett's experience as a slaveholder during and after the nullification crisis.
