- Abstract
In this paper we talk about the diversity of a group of curious salamanders, known as axolotls, belonging to Ambystoma genus. Some of their distinctive characteristics are explained, including their regenerative properties, metamorphosis process and popular beliefs related to their medicinal properties. Even though 18 of the 33 species of existent axolotls inhabit Mexican territory, a huge part of the related scientific research has focused on a single species. Most of the species in Mexico are included in a category of risk of extinction, therefore working on their conservation becomes fundamental, such actions will promote their conservation as well as the water bodies where they live, and the biodiversity associated with their habitats.
