- Abstract
The definitions of nationalism in most cases are flexible, highlighting certain distinctive aspects of its nature and function, without providing a unique form of it as a state or a stable and constant reality. This occurs due to the dynamism that characterizes nationalism. However, the worldly and historical reality shoes that nationalism is neither universal nor permanent. It is historically born and activated in a local level, with characteristics that differ from one place to another. Therefore, the local contexts where nationalisms appear, are of significant importance in order to learn their history, their effects, as well as to assess their historical and ethical dimension. The Albanian nationalism, judged by its nature, function and the transformation it had gone through since its appearance to this day, appears to have enjoyed a short period of affirmation and a long period of continuous degradation. Its history, its targets and drastic changes, if analyzed according to standard theoretical definitions on nationalism, make this nationalism today look like a ghost, who appears to have lived once, while today wanders like a shadow, ignored, misunderstood, mistreated and manipulated with no mercy, from the uninformed descendants of the ideologues of Albanian nationalism. Those who shaped it and functionalized it, as a practical instrument for the creation of the nation and the nation state, would not believe the level of degradation that their invention has gone through.
