- Abstract
The article reports on various historic events occurring in October including the 1870 escape of French statesman Léon Gambetta from the Prussian siege of Paris, France; the 1944 state funeral for Field Marshal Erwin Rommel who was forced to commit suicide after the failed attempt on German leader Adolph Hitler's life, and the 1520 navigation by explorer Ferdinand Magellan through the straits south of Cape Horn, later renamed the Strait of Magellan.
