- Title
THE CORRECT ORIGINAL SPELLING OF BARTRAM'S IXIA (IXIA CAELESTINA: IRIDACEAE).
- Authors
Franck, Alan R.; Manolaraki, Eleni H.
- Abstract
For optimal communication, each taxonomic name ideally has one proper spelling. The specific epithet of Bartram's Ixia has usually been spelled as coelestina, which is incorrect and contrary to the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi, and Plants. In the protologue, Bartram originally spelled it as caelestina, which is an acceptable Latin form that ought to be adopted. The ae variant has been utilized and accepted for names of several other taxa since Bartram. The proper spelling of the basionym of Bartram's Ixia is Ixia caelestina.
