- Abstract
The article examines materialism and vitalism in the early 18th-century satirical poem "The Rape of the Lock" by Alexander Pope. The alleged Rosicrucian framework of the poem is scrutinized along with te alleged influence of the 1670 Abbé Montfaucon de Villars book "Le Comte de Gabalis: ou Entretiens sur les Sciences Secretes" on his description of sylphs and the gendered nature of agency in the poem.
