- Abstract
The aim of this work was to study in depth the difficulties that students have interpreting the relation among graphs of position, velocity and acceleration. In kinematics, the graphs are didactic resources that teachers use quite often under the assumption that graphs help to understand better. The graphic abstraction has been studied with different perspectives, even though there are not enough research designs about student's ideas-expressions when they analyze a graph within their scientific language. In this qualitative research, we investigate interpretation of graphics of kinematics through semi-structured interview. Engineering students participated after they learned graphical analysis as part of their physics course. We analyzed participants' discourses through the scientific communication skills. This theoretical tool set up fundamental aspects of scientific communication. We chose to apply representation, communication, and problem solving, given the nature of this study related with graphics of kinematics. During the analysis of categories, we identified the scientific communication aspects that emerged from the students' discourse. Results show us relation analysis between concepts and graphical elements. We discuss the implications of these abilities through interpretation of graphics. The results show us the relations and concepts that students use to interpret kinematics graphs.
