- Abstract
A Global Pathways Certificate program designed to enhance student's intercultural competence is presented as an interdisciplinary approach to promoting the understanding of diversity among various groups. Building intercultural competence in a public research university presents significant program and instructional challenges, in terms of goals, definition, coursework and co-curricular experience, instructors' skills, utilizing on-campus experiences and interactions among students with different backgrounds, solidifying learning through reflection, and learning assessment. The components of the Global Pathways Certificate include intercultural experiences, coursework designed around a selected theme area, language study, oncampus activities, and a final synthesis paper. Competence is assessed using a survey instrument administered twice to each student, and by review of reports and reflection papers. Ongoing challenges remain, such as drawing more faculty members to this objective, deepening assessment, and connecting with other university constituencies.
