- Abstract
The Episcopal Cathedral of Bălţi (Bessarabia) was built between 1924-1934, at the initiative of Visarion Puiu, the first bishop of the Diocese of Hotin, the Romanian government providing the land and the funding for the construction. On September 28, 1924, Carol the IInd, the Crown Prince, was present at the setting of the first stone, and later, on June 2, 1936, when he was the King of Romania, to the consecration of the Cathedral. At the celebration from 1936 took part ministers of the Romanian government, members of the Romanian Orthodox Church and representatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, Greek and Polish Orthodox Church. The Cathedral is built in the classic style of the Byzantine churches of Mount Athos. The painting has been restored in the years 2002-2004. Like many other religious edifices in Bessarabia, the cathedral was desecrated during the communist regime.
