- Abstract
In 1878 the municipal architect of Valladolid, Joaquín Ruiz Sierra, signed the project for the only nineteenth-century iron market that remains today, though transformed, in Valladolid: the Val market. Its building process was both problematic and interesting from historical, social, political, constructive, and artistic perspectives. Our paper offers new information about the architectural development in Valladolid in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, thanks to the study of unpublished documents. In addition, it provides a better understanding of our national iron architecture, from historical and technical approaches. Many researchers point out the Val market as one of the most interesting examples of nineteenth-century iron architecture. Thus, our paper focuses on it and its context, marked by the confrontation between architects, political authorities, and a society whose public opinion was manipulated by the press, studying the defense of the creative individuality of architectural work.
