- Abstract
The book "Mother Cow, Mother India: A Multispecies Politics of Dairy in India" by Yamini Narayanan explores the contradictions between the veneration of cows in Indian culture and the realities of the dairy industry and meat export in India. The author conducted ethnographic research in 12 states between 2014 and 2017, examining the production, protection, and consumption of bovine bodies. The book discusses topics such as the connection between the milk and beef economy, the hierarchical arrangement of purity and pollution in the animal world, the maternal vulnerabilities of dairy cows, the activities of cow vigilantes, and the cruelty and vulnerabilities in trafficking and slaughtering. The author ultimately envisions a post-dairy future rooted in veganism and a reevaluation of the animal-human relationship. While the book has some repetition and does not address the informal relationships between animals and humans in small farming areas, it is a significant contribution to animal studies in the Indian context.
