- Authors
UREÑA-RAVELO, BRIANA L.
- Abstract
This article discusses the controversy surrounding JoJo Siwa's claim to have created a new genre called "gay pop." Many people online pointed out that gay pop has existed for a long time and has deep roots in the LGBTQ+ community. The article explores the historical origins of gay pop, tracing it back to drag balls during the Harlem Renaissance and highlighting the contributions of various artists. The author argues that Siwa's attempt to brand and market gay pop is a disconnect from the community and history of the genre. They emphasize the importance of respecting and acknowledging the contributions of those who came before.
