- Abstract
An exploration into the potential for occupational therapists to collaborate with AccessCampus, Limerick was conducted by six occupational therapy students at the University of Limerick, as a part of a module for the MSc. Occupational Therapy programme. AccessCampus provides numerous services for the community of Limerick City South, serving those in primary education, secondary education and the adult population with a focus on facilitating access to higher education. Information was gathered via interviews with the co-ordinator and educational support worker at AccessCampus to identify the needs of its service population and current service provision. A community profile was complied, further influencing the development of the potential interventions. Needs identified included improved communication, greater access to information (including career information), improved parent and child interactions, improved children's ability to regulate anger and self expression, improved leadership skills, improved problem-solving skills, increased self-esteem and self- confidence and greater empowerment. The key potential roles identified for Occupational Therapy collaboration with AccessCampus were: • Vocational exploration programme for secondary school students • Occupational Therapy assessments • Social and personal development programmes • Programmes promoting interactions between parents and their children • Lifelong learning programmes AccessCampus are currently working towards implementing these recommendations with the commencement of an Occupational Therapy practice education placement.
