- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of pioneer-established public libraries and reading rooms to British Columbia's colonial society, focusing on the ways in which these institutions sought to uphold British colonial power in Victoria, British Columbia. More broadly, the importance of reading to the functioning of colonial society is outlined. The purchasing of books for these libraries is explained by the author. The government's desire to educate Victoria's miners through the use of libraries is also examined.
