- Abstract
This contribution traces the way in which the changes the Czech society had undergone since the last quarter of the 18th century influenced the way it interprets Hussitism. Hussitism started as a movement advocating a Church reform and only later focused also on a change of political structure, aiming at strengthening the role of the estates. Even so, ever since the Enlightenment Period, scholars and the public tended to focus mainly on its secular aspects, while interest in its religious dimension was dwindling. This process culminated after February 1948, when the Communist regime ostentatiously acclaimed the Hussite legacy but interpreted Hussitism very narrowly in terms of a class struggle. At the moment, interest in Hussitism is largely in decline.
