- Abstract
Since the first renal transplantation, rejection prevention and control have been main aims of medical research. While acute rejection rates have fallen to 10-15% at 1 year, chronic rejection still erode long-term transplant potential. Current drugs for prevention and treatment of renal rejection are remarkably improved with regard to their profile of effectiveness, but remain unsatisfactory in terms of safety. The objective of this article is to present a review of already known immunosuppressive drugs, new immunosuppressive agents and protocoles employing them. Some of these drugs have already entered clinical practice (e.g.,steroids mycophenolate mofetil and mycophenolate sodium, anti-CD25 monoclonal antibodies, sirolimus, everolimus), others are at different stages of the pre-registration phase (leflunomide-FK 778, Campath-1H) and many others show potential for the future (rituximab, monoclonal antibodies against costimulatory molecules).
