- Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the school engagement of high school students according to school type, class level and gender variables. This study, based on the survey model, was conducted with 591 high school students studying in private and state high schools in central districts of Ankara. School Engagement Scale developed by Arastaman (2006) was used as data collection tool. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to analyze the data. When examined comparatively, it was concluded that the school engagement of the participants differed significantly according to the gender and grade level, and that the school type did not make a significant difference. The interaction of these three variables made a significant difference on school engagement. These findings point out that policy makers who develop policy in education need to look at the processes that will increase school engagement, including gender, class level and type of school, within the structure of a holistic school engagement.
