- Abstract
Objective: Herpes Zoster is an exanthematous disease composed of vesicles and bullae on an erythematous ground in a skin region compatible with the dermatome or dermatomes of one or more sensorial nerves. The aim of this study was to evaluate the opinions of patients with Herpes Zoster on their disease such as cause, triggering factors and outcome and to investigate the elements that might affect these opinions. Material and Methods: Sixty patients older than 18 years presenting with pain and rash, who were clinically diagnosed to have Herpes Zoster were included in the study. A survey form including multiple choice questions that were obtained as a result of a literature search by the investigators was used to be applied in patients with Herpes Zoster. Results: Among the participants, 33 (55%) were males and 27 (45%) were females. Level of education of the cases was low in 81.7% (illiterate, elementary, middle and high school) and high in 18.3% (university) . The most frequently selected cause for triggering and exacerbating causes of the disease was stress. About the answers on the outcome of the disease, 25% of the patients thought that they would completely be healed, 21.7% though that they would be healed but the disease would recur, 18.3% thought that they wouldn't get well, and 35% responded as they had no idea on this subject. Conclusion: The knowledge of the patients on Herpes Zoster disease was found to be inadequate.
