- Abstract
Hope is a concept that has been caught between the reality of both the clinical and the research worlds. Clinical practitioners and lay persons have long known that hope is a necessary ingredient for well-being, and even for sustaining life itself. Researchers, on the other hand, have been reluctant to test hope as a construct because it is 'soft' and difficult to measure. What is needed is a blend of our clinical experiences and our empirical knowledge about hope, so that our clinical knowledge about this concept is founded on a firm research base. In this article, four central attributes of hope are examined. This is followed by a discussion of how two hope scales measured these attributes in a community-based sample of older adults. From these empirical results and qualitative observations, additional issues of hope that instruments should seek to measure are identified.
