- Abstract
During the The Democratic Sexennial a regionalist federalism of krausist basis was manifested in Catalonia. This federalism differed from both the federalism called intransigent, of Pimargallian basis, and the organi-cist federalism with a Krausist basis which defended, from Madrid, a fundamentally more conservative republicanism, headed by Nicolás Salmerón and Emilio Castelar. The Catalan Regionalist Federalism had Salvador Sanpere y Miquel (1840-1915) and Eusebi Pascual y Casas (1837-1883) as its most prominent defendants and theorists. This type of federalism postulated the defense of a politically well integrated Catalonia as a federal state within a federally structured Spanish (or Iberian) nation. Nonetheless, this state should have had a high degree of exclusive powers with the objective of guaranteeing its cultural, economical and civil law particularities. It is necessary to frame the affirmation of this federalism within the context of the rise of the cultural movement of the Catalan Renaixença.
