WARREN, JEAN-PHILIPPE
- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the Hydro-Québec water power state corporation and its conflicts with democratic groups. Topics mentioned include the exploitation of natural resources such as petroleum in the Middle East, the difference in the profit margins of water or oil power, and the construction of state projects such as the Baie James dam. Also examined are the tax revenues hydroelectricity provides the state, the paradoxical effect of oil exploitation on an economy, and the Québec aluminum industry. The complex interaction between electrical power production and democratic norms is reflected in Hydro-Québec's history.
