- Abstract
This article reports that the pioneer in the teaching of speech faced not only the task of building a program but frequently the more difficult one of gaining for it recognition and stature. Frederick Wesley Orr, professor emeritus of speech at the University of Washington, was one of those pioneers. Three times during his career he was cast in that role and each time he played it with conspicuous success. He worked his way through the school, trying many odd jobs such as an extra in the theatre and as a cutter in a garment factory. It was in 1906 at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, that Orr began his pioneering in the field of speech. When he came to Pacific there was no Department of Speech.
