- Title
The Epistemological Status of Psychoanalysis.
- Authors
Eagle, Morris N.
- Abstract
The article argues that a consideration of the epistemological status of psychoanalytic theory does not suggest a divide between psychoanalysis and natural science. The author considers the core psychoanalytic propositions which include analyses of the nature of mental functioning, personality development, psychopathology and psychoanalytic treatment. He also discusses direct experimental tests and indirect evidence relating to these core propositions. He is convinced that skepticism towards these tests and evidence is justified because of the lack of ecological validity.
