- Abstract
And while the titles of the arias in Daneret's repertory were already known, Nestola has for the first time been able to attribute them to specific composers, among them Pallavicino, Cesti, Lontano, and Pollarolo. Soon after the start of his personal reign in 1661, Louis XIV began a campaign to foster a distinctive national cultural identity with the aim of ensuring French artistic hegemony. From 1694, for example, the Comédie-Italienne employed Élisabeth Daneret ("Mlle Gherardi"), who, in addition to singing the customary vaudevilles and French airs, introduced audiences to arias from Venetian operas.
