- Abstract
The article focuses on composer William Schuman and his composition Secular Cantata No.2, "A Free Song," and the story behind the Pulitzer Prize he has received for this cantata. It states that as Schuman anticipated, the cantata had its desired effect at its premiere. The Pulitzer Prize advisory committee also reacted positively and submitted "A Free Song" as the sole candidate for the first ever Pulitzer Prize in Music. How the music jury unanimously chosen "A Free Song," still remains as a matter of speculation. However, "A Free Song," as Schuman recognized, was "a constructive force in contemporary life," the right piece for the right time that chanced to receive the right award for the right reasons.
