Misperception and Protestant Reading in Gammer Gurton's Needle.
- Authors
ARDOLINO, FRANK
- Abstract
The article analyzes the 16th century English comedic play "Gammer Gurton's Needle" by an anonymous author. According to the article, the play is considered to be an example of the hybrid English drama. How the importance of right reading can be viewed as a Protestant religion interpretation allowing the reader to transcend the Catholic religion's emphasis on materiality and the literal interpretation of the Eucharist is explored. It is argued that the "Gammer Gurton's Needle" play is actually a Protestant Reformation play that is disguised as a coarse comedy intended to promote the Protestant English community. An overview of the play is also given.
