- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyse the theoretical bases and resources used in Spanish musical theatre during the reigns of Charles III and Charles IV to represent a new femininity, far removed from the traditional canon and closer to the ideals of the Enlightenment, which emphasised the rational equality of the sexes and advocated greater participation by women in the public sphere. The paper examines the changes in stereotypical expectations of male and female roles in the theatre, where women have been portrayed as powerful and natural in the expression of their feelings and physicality. This new trend, which included traditional masculine characteristics, is reflected in specific terms such as «despejo» and «marcialidad» which recur in the critical and satirical writings of the time, creating a coded semantic field that is transmitted through sound symbols in the musical performances of popular characters in tonadillas and zarzuelas.
