- Abstract
Combined oral contraceptives are the most prescribed and consumed drugs in the world. The first combined hormonal contraceptive pill was released in 1960 and since its introduction into the market there have been considerable changes in its composition, mainly associated with the type and dose of estrogens and progestins. In our country it is the main method of pharmacological contraceptive and very close to the condom according to the latest data published by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE). Combined oral contraceptives can be prescribed to any patient seeking a reversible contraception method; despite this there are very situations in which they are contraindicated such as a personal history of thromboembolism. Combined oral contraceptives should be considered not to protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Among the benefits of combined oral contraceptives are: regulation of the menstrual cycle, decreased menstrual bleeding, dysmenorrhea, etc. Side effects of combined oral contraceptives are common in three first three months of treatment; however, they disappear spontaneously. The midwife plays an essential role in the contraceptive council, this requires a good medical history and a complementary physical examination, as well as a good health education on self-care, to ensure good therapeutic adherence, avoid unwanted pregnancies and possible adverse effects.
