- Abstract
The article discusses the extent to which Brazilian marine and coastal protected areas are effectively implementing socio-environmental interests and rights based on the case of the "Prainha do Canto Verde" Extractive Reserve (RESEX). While the community residing in the protected area is a reference of socio-environmental struggle in the state of Ceará for its resistance to real estate speculation and for the defense of artisanal fishing, the very existence of this RESEX, formalized in 2009, has been the stage of recurring social conflicts. Through qualitative analysis and bibliographic and documentary research, the article sought to analyze the advantages and limits of RESEX for the social and environmental protection of the place. It was found that, although the Resex represents an instrument capable of implementing socioenvironmentalism in the context of coastal fishing communities, there is an insufficiency of the instrument to guarantee the social protection that guarantees stability to the traditional population that inhabits it.
