- Authors
Tikoff, Valentina K.
- Abstract
The article offers information on the education and training of orphans at the Royal School of San Elmo during the 18th century in Seville, Spain. The institution provided access to skilled maritime positions from the late seventeenth through the mid-nineteenth century. The management did not consider the orphans as a cheap labour but as a resource to be developed and rewarded. The facility provided educational opportunities, stimulated wards to excel, defended them against critics and pioneered a training program that would influence subsequent navigation schools.
