- Authors
Pagratis, Gerassimos D.
- Abstract
This paper examines the development of Corfu as a nexus for trade in the Mediterranean during the era when Venice was dominant. It shows how local merchants and shippers took advantage of the island's strategic location and privileged position in the trade between Venice and the eastern Mediterranean to carve out an important niche in a sizeable commercial network. Members of the Corfiot mercantile network purchased foodstuffs for both domestic and overseas sales and accumulated capital through a series of commercial transactions. The essay also traces the relative decline of Corfu as a trading centre in the sixteenth century.
