- Abstract
Faced with the supposed need to take leave of the traditional thinking about the soul, the article intends to understand the reasons that led to defending the human uniqueness by using this term / concept. It starts with the verification of whether a Hellenization of the anthropological conception of the Bible has actually taken place in theological thought. The conclusion reached is that, from a methodological point of view, one should be more cautious about advocating a rupture between the biblical vision and the view of the philosophical-theological tradition: it seems more correct to maintain that these are two approaches, different but not opposed, to affirm the uniqueness of the human being with respect to the other living beings. It is captured in a paradigmatic form in the reflection of Thomas. The second part focused the attention on the theme of the origin of the soul, which in Augustine and his epigones is connected to the theme of the transmission of the original sin. In recent times, this theme has been taken up in the dialogue with the theory of evolution, which is plausibly tackled by K. Rahner. The conclusive instance that one arrives at is that, apart from the use of the term / concept “soul”, what is at stake is the human uniqueness, which one should not fear to reaffirm in an ontological perspective.
