- Abstract
The article examines medical necessity in relation to insurance payment in the U.S. The Medicare Program defines medical necessity as something that is more than covered diagnosis as there is other criteria that should be present before a service is considered medically necessary. It is also said that not all insurers reimburse medical expenses based on medical necessity. It is suggested that Medicare should have a medical necessity guideline for the insurers to follow.
