- Title
Civilization Inoculated: Nostalgia and the Marketing of Emerging Technologies.
- Authors
OLIVIER, MARC
- Abstract
The article discusses the ways in which nostalgia becomes associated with emerging technologies as a means to allay the stress of modernization. More specifically, the paradoxical nature of nostalgia is analyzed as it relates to the implementation of technological innovations and the perceived forward-progress of civilization. The author is specifically concerned with how nostalgia operated within the development and use of the sewing machine, Eastman Kodak Co.'s Brownie camera, and the personal computer (PC). Nostalgic imagery can either be incorporated into a product's actual design, as in the sewing machine, or in advertisements promoting it.
