The article discusses the June 2, 1864 transfer of authority over the Ionian Islands from the British government to the Greek monarchy. According to the article, Great Britain acquired the island from the French during the Napoleonic Wars. The article describes British governance of the islands including a constitution granted in 1817 by then-British Lord High Commissioner Sir Thomas Maitland, a legislature, and local resentment of British rule. It also discusses British reaction to an 1821 Greek revolt, the Crimean War, and reforms attempted by commissioner Sir John Storks.
