- Abstract
The article discusses the historical development of measuring time. The author begins by discussing the religious influence on the development of calendars and the eventual adoption of the Gregorian calendar among European nations. Alterations to the traditional calendar, which included changes to the length of days and months, made by the government of the First French Republic are then described. The adoption of the International Date Line through international treaties is also explained.
